Diabetes - In Pets?

November has been declared Pet Diabetes Month by Intervet, an animal health company. Intervet recently announced that less than 50% of pet owners surveyed were aware of the fact that pets can get diabetes. Diabetes is a life-threatening disease if it is not diagnosed and managed properly. In a 2003 study of veterinary teaching hospitals, it was reported that 1 dog of every 580 dogs will be diagnosed with diabetes. This number may not sound alarming, but realize that many dogs are diagnosed by their regular veterinarian and the diagnosis is not made at a teaching hospital. The figure for cats is 1 in 200. To learn more about diabetes, please read our article in the Pet Care section.

Please note that this information does not replace onsite, professional, veterinary care. It is solely for educational purposes. Your pet's medical condition should be evaluated by a veterinarian before any medical decisions are implemented. If there is a potentially life-threatening emergency involving your pet, take your pet to a veterinarian or veterinary facility immediately.
