Cats can be notoriously difficult to treat with oral medications. They are quite adept at spitting pills back out and slobbering and foaming when liquid medications are administered. With a chronic medical condition like hyperthyroidism, which affects the mood of normally happy cats making them very cranky, oral medications may be impossible. Fortunately, topical medication is a viable alternative for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. Although many medications can't be applied topically because the absorption is not predictable, topical methimazole is quite effective. Dosage may vary, but with careful monitoring, an appropriate dose can be achieved in most cases.
Hyperthyroidism can be permanently treated with surgery or radioactive iodine therapy, but most veterinarians choose to treat with methimazole first, to make sure that the thyroid disease is not covering up an underlying kidney problem. Most cats are treated for at least one month prior to undergoing any permanent therapy.
As cats get older, they are more likely to suffer from this common endocrine problem. Talk to your veterinarian today about screening your cat for this disease. Early intervention and treatment will prevent devastating complications such as heart disease.
