Did you adopt a dog from the shelter or humane society? Ever wonder what breeds came together to make up your mutt? Well, now you can find out.
A new genetics test can be run on a cheek swab from your pooch and let you know with some degree of certainty who your dog's ancestors are.
Why would you be interested? Well, some people might be just interested for curiosity's sake. Still others may want to know why their mutt keeps trying to herd the kids together in the backyard and on a more scientific note, pet owners and veterinarians may want to know what breeds are involved to help identify possible health problems and intervene before they become untreatable. Certain breeds are prone to certain types of cancer, and this might be one area where this information might be most useful. Targeted care by your veterinarian could help identify these most likely types of health problems and intervene early on in the course of the disease.
As science advances in the arena of genetics for all species, we will likely be hearing about more and more available tests and even treatments.
