According to a 2004 study by the National Coalition for the Homeless, between 5 and 10 percent of homeless people living outdoors have pets. These homeless individuals often will not enter shelters because they would have to abandon their pets and there are few programs that help feed and care for these homeless pets.
In Nevada, a new collaborative effort between one veterinary hospital and FISH (Friends in Service Helping, a provider for disadvantaged people in Nevada) has resulted in "Feeding Pets of the Homeless". This kit teaches organizations how to go about linking efforts for caring for the homeless pets of homeless people.
