Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is a behavioral disorder that many pet dogs suffer. This can be a devastating problem to manage as these dogs become hysterical when they are left behind, often causing damage to the home or injuring themselves. Veterinary behaviorists agree that behavioral modification therapy is critical to successful resolution. Sometimes, behavioral therapy is combined with medical therapy for best results. Two veterinary medications, Clomicalm and Reconcile are on the market. Clomicalm, made by Novartis, has been approved by the FDA since 1999. Reconcile, similar to Prozac, was just launched by Eli Lilly & Co. If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, talk to your vet about behavioral therapy and whether or not medication might be beneficial. Some natural remedies might also be available as options to help resolve the problem.

Your pet's medical condition should be evaluated by a veterinarian before any medical decisions are implemented. If there is a potentially life-threatening emergency involving your pet, take your pet to a veterinarian or veterinary facility immediately.
